Commercial Bin Compactor Guide 2025

11th Mar 2025

If you are regularly struggling to close the lid on your commercial bins, your waste collection company will gladly offer you a larger bin or more frequent collections. Although this solves the problem, it is also likely to cost you more each month. The alternative solution to overflowing bins is to install a commercial bin compactor.

What is a commercial bin compactor?

A commercial bin compactor is a machine that compacts business waste to reduce the volume of it. Some compactors are designed to compact a specific size of bin whereas others will condense small individual bags of waste into a single bag. Compactors can be used on both general and recyclable waste.

How can it reduce business overheads?

If you pay for waste collection on a per-bin or per-bag basis, installing a compactor can help you to maximize the amount of waste you can fit inside your bins or waste bags. Even if you have shopped around for the cheapest waste collection service, if you’re not compacting your business waste, your bins are likely to contain lots of empty space when they are collected.

The financial benefits of using any type of waste compactor are linked to the number of bins you have, the frequency of your waste collections and the costs you currently pay. The higher the number of bins you have, the larger the potential cost savings for your business.

However, the benefits should not just be calculated in financial terms alone. Less frequent collections can help to improve your relationship with your neighbours and reduce your carbon footprint. The space created by removing bins or skips from your premises can be used for other purposes such as outdoor seating or horticulture to improve kerb-appeal.

How do you use one?

Wheelie Bin Compactors can be used in conjunction with the commercial wheeled bins that have been already supplied to you by your waste collection company. The benefits of using a business waste are instantly visible and the operation of the machine is very straightforward. The machines are designed not to damage the structure of your bin and can be installed inside or outside. Powered by hydraulics, they will need to be installed near to an electrical socket.

Waste Bag Compactors work in a very similar way to Wheeled Bin Compactors with the only difference being that you will need to purchase large heavy-duty bags for the smaller bags to be compacted into. By contrast, this type of machine is powered by pneumatics therefore you will need to connect it to an air compressor (that can be supplied) or existing airline.

You will not need to inform your waste collection company that you are compacting your waste. However, you do need to be mindful that some companies charge a penalty for bins that are overweight.

Why do businesses have lots of bins?

Additional workplace bins sourced to comply with the new Simpler Recycling legislation in England in March 2025 have in resulted in more individual bags of waste being produced that need to be condensed at a central point before being collected by a waste collector.

What type of businesses are likely to get the best results from using a compactor?

  1. Businesses with 3 or more commercial bins
  2. Businesses that produce lots of compactable business waste
  3. Businesses with infrequent waste collections
  4. Businesses with high waste bin emptying costs

What are the top 3 benefits of installing one?

  1. Potential to reduce the size of your bins or skips
  2. Potential to reduce the frequency of your collections
  3. Potential to reduce your bin emptying costs

What are the alternatives?

If your commercial waste is predominantly recyclable, a waste baler may prove to be a better investment. This is because many types of recyclable waste can be baled, decreasing the overall volume of the waste but increasing the value of it.
