Recycling Equipment for Retail Businesses

We've supplied Recycling Equipment to all types of retailers including independent retail shops, large chains and even to some of the UK's most well-known shopping centres. By supplying a waste compactor or baler we’ve helped many retail outlets reduce their cardboard and plastic packaging disposal costs. Cardboard balers and Plastic Balers can also help business to comply with UK Packaging Waste Regulations.

Unpacking a new delivery of stock can be a labourious task however, retail staff needn't have to flatten cardboard boxes if your retail store has a Waste Baler as they can be put into the machine whole. Large cardboard boxes are also not a problem as some of our machines have extra large chambers for bulkier waste. Not only will this help to boost productivity (and also reduce the chance of the dreaded paper cut!) it'll also make stockrooms and outside space tidier creating a nicer and more spacious work environment.

Below are some examples of the retailers who we have supplied waste balers and waste compactors to. Due to commercial sensitivity, they don't want us to share their names but if you contact us we can provide you more information about the type of equipment they are using.

QCR helps Nationwide Supermarket with their waste problems

This National Supermarket chain has hundreds of stores in the UK. From fresh food to a clothing range, they offer the full package to its shoppers. Their distribution operation is one of the most sophisticated and hard working in the UK. With almost 30 distribution centres nationwide, they transport all recyclable waste back to the Distribution Centre and manage the waste from there. They were looking for a solution for the southwest region of the UK.

Each retail store produced high quantities of cardboard and plastic packaging from their regular deliveries of stock. The cardboard was flat packed into cages and then backhauled to the distribution centre. Each store in the south west region would fill around 30 cages with used cardboard per day which used valuable staff time and took up a lot of space both in store and in transit. Plastic waste was being sent to landfill.

Bespoke Recycling Equipment Solutions

QCR offered the retail chain a range of options of waste equipment from bin compactors to balers to suit each individual store. This means that each store in the south west was given a bespoke solution. QCR currently supply 58 stores in the area allowing each one to manage their recycling waste at the source. All these stores are now either compacting their waste or baling their cardboard and plastic which had previously gone to landfill.

Savings generated by using a Cardboard Baler

One bale of cardboard replaces six cages of flat packed card. Over an hour a day in labour is saved loading and unloading vehicles. Revenue is also being generated from the products being baled for recycling.

Additional benefits:

  • Balers are located close to the source of waste reducing distances walked by staff
  • Greater tidiness of the store's stockroom & waste storage space
  • Reduced landfill costs
  • Cardboard boxes no longer need to be torn, folded or flattened saving a huge amount of time and effort. Cardboard boxes can be placed straight into the baler for compacting.

QCR saves Birmingham supermarket chain over £5,000 per annum in waste costs

The supermarket specialise in discounted goods in three communities across Birmingham. They are a supermarket that responds to the needs of the local community and provides healthy, diverse local food and goods at reasonable prices. They approached QCR to find a cost-effective solution for their large amounts of cardboard and plastic packaging waste. Space limitations, overflowing bins and general tidiness were issues effecting their retail operations. Whilst in the scheme of things the cost of the wheelie bins and skips were not huge, they could see this cost rising every year.

They asked QCR to provide a free site survey to see if they could make operational and financial savings to the way they dispose of their waste. QCR offered a completely free trial that did not impact on their current waste contract. A QCR 1600 Large Cardboard & Plastic Baler was delivered to their premises to trial for an agreed period.

Savings generated by the packaging baler

The Baler trial was a great success and resulted in each site being able to remove 3-6 lifts of various sized bins. They now bale all cardboard and plastic at the three shops. This has given them financial savings and a revenue income in excess of £5,000 per year.

Taking advantage of QCR's Baler upgrade for rental customers

They have had enormous success over the last year and footfall to the shop continues to grow. Their success means an increase in stock and of course waste. This meant that it was viable to upgrade to the QCR V50 Mill Size Baler. With the three QCR V50s installed, they are now earning a further £520 per year as they are now baling mill sized bales of recyclable material.

Customer feedback from our retail baler customer:

"I took advantage of QCRs free equipment trial because I wanted proof the baler would benefit me. I was surprised how good the baler was and the savings I made in just the trial period. The success of the shops meant we could upgrade to a mill size baler and now we earn more per ton than before” -  Managing Director

High street fashion retailer installs QCR 102 Balers at all their stores

This retail fashion brand attracts over 10.8 million UK female shoppers each year. Their market share is 10.4% and it's increasing with the push into men's fashion. They are committed to reducing their impact on the planet by reducing the waste they send to landfill and using less energy. With constant changing fashion lines the group generates a significant amount of both cardboard and plastic waste. This waste was put in bins or bags and then sent to landfill.

Solution

QCR 102 balers have been installed in all their stores. All cardboard and plastic waste is now baled and returned to the distribution depot for recycling.

Savings

Removing cardboard and plastic from the waste stream has enabled them to reduce their waste costs substantially. In city centre stores, where local council bags must be used the savings are even greater. These savings will pay for the baler within 18 months.

Additional benefits

  • The balers are located inside the store, close to the source of the waste. This saves the amount of time it used to take to carry the waste out to the bins.
  • Security is improved by keeping the rear doors to the stores closed. There is no longer a need to go out to the bins regularly.
  • Cardboard boxes no longer need to be torn, folded or flattened, saving a huge amount of time and effort.
  • Recycling these waste streams significantly enhances their green credentials and helps towards their pledge to reduce their waste going to landfill.
